Amalgam - The "Silver" Filling

Fact. Silver amalgam contains approximately 50% mercury metal, this mercury is continuously released as vapour into mouth air and the amount released increases when chewing or brushing the teeth.

Fact. For an average individual with eight occlusal amalgam fillings a total of 120 micrograms (ug) of mercury could be released daily into the mouth. The consensus average estimate is 10ug absorbed per day compared to the daily absorption of 2.3ug from fish and seafood and 0.3ug from other foods, air and water.

Fact. Mercury enters the body by inhalation of vapour, swallowing abraded amalgam fragments, by direct absorption across the oral mucosa, and by migration through teeth and tissues. Mercury vapour will pass through the lining of the mouth and nose and be transported directly to the brain. From here it is transported to all parts of the brain and spinal chord. Symptoms are dependant on which part of the brain is affected.

Fact. Human autopsy studies reveal significantly higher mercury concentrations in brain and kidney of subjects with aged amalgam fillings than in subjects who had no amalgam tooth restorations.

Fact. Amalgam fillings will produce vapour levels from 6-150 ug per cubic metre of air. Paints, which contained mercury, were banned for producing Mercury vapour levels of 2 to 3 ug per cubic metre of air.

Fact. Mercury levels in the brain have been shown to be in direct proportion to the number of tooth surfaces covered by Amalgam Fillings in the mouth. Research links mercury levels in the brain with Alzheimer's Disease. Mercury is the metal found in greatest concentrations in the brain of Alzheimer's patients.

Fact. The widely varying symptoms of "multiple sclerosis" can be produced by many causes, often man-made. Chief among these says MS specialist Dr Patrick Kingsley is mercury poisoning from amalgam fillings. Of the several thousands of MS patients he has treated, only a handful did not have evidence of mercury poisoning.

Fact. Heart function is affected by mercury poisoning. Mercury causes damage to the walls of the small blood vessels in the form of micro-angiopathies. The result is reduced or no blood supply to the tissues which will cause cell damage and cell death.

Fact. Early neurological symptoms of long term low level mercury poisoning are: Fatigue, short-term memory loss, poor concentration, obsessive, phobic, compulsive behaviour. Later symptoms are shakes and neuro-motor interference.

Fact. Mercury will always affect the immune system. This creates an environment for the growth of organisms and the production of further disease. A number of AutoImmune diseases including Lupus, Lichen Planus, Chrohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis may develop.

Mercury has been implicated as a causative factor in development of Endometriosis and problems with thyroid gland function. If the immune system is affected it is possible that other minor ailments such as fungal infections, including candida, will be able to affect the body.

Fact. Mercury binds to Haemoglobin in the red blood cell, reducing the amount of oxygen which can be carried, a major cause of fatigue.

Fact. In pregnancy mercury from amalgam fillings will cross the placenta and the breast milk. Mercury is concentrated in the foetus and breast milk 8 x more than in the mother's tissue. In the foetus and infant the highest concentrations are in the pituitary gland and the heart.

No medical authority has been able to demonstrate a safe level of mercury on the pituitary gland of a foetus.

The levels of mercury in the foetus, new-born and young child are directly proportional to the number of amalgams in the mother's mouth.

If you are pregnant DO NOT have amalgam fillings inserted or removed. Ideally do not go to a surgery where amalgam fillings are used as mercury vapour levels may be high enough to effect the health of the foetus.

Fact. Dentist Peter Lawson of the University of Surrey has found that mercury toxins can cross the placenta increasing the concentration in the foetus by 40 per cent more than the concentration in the mother.

Maternal hair and foetal blood samples detected in utero mercury exposure. These showed a direct correlation between mercury levels and children's future neurological defects.

This research may mean that a large body load of mercury in the mother can cause neurological damage in her child. (The Lancet, 1997;350:1453)

Fact. The British Government's Chief Dental Officer, Robin Wild, advised pregnant women not to have or remove amalgam tooth fillings. He said there was a possible risk that vapour from the mercury could damage unborn children, (April 1998).

Fact. The State of California, requires all dentists who choose to continue to use mercury amalgam to post the following warning clearly in their surgeries.

"Warning

This office uses amalgam filling materials which contain and expose you to Mercury, a chemical known to the state of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm.
Please consult your dentist for more information."

Fact. A research project has demonstrated that mercury from amalgam fillings cause an increase in antibiotic resistance in the bacteria of the gut and the mouth. This may make relatively simple infections difficult to treat.

Fact. The differing metals in amalgam fillings react to form a battery. The electric currents generated are in the microamp range. This is in the same order of magnitude as that induced in a person standing under a high voltage power line.

Brain currents are measured in nano amps, one nano amp is 1000 x less than one micro amp. The higher the current the more Mercury will be released from amalgam fillings. Gold and stainless steel combinations can increase the electrical currents.

Amalgam under crowns is not sealed off, it is still toxic and will still migrate through the tooth to the surrounding tissue.

Fact. The World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1991 published findings that the main source of Mercury exposure and absorption is from dental amalgam fillings - up to ten times the amount you get from fish and seafood.

They concluded that there is NO safe level of Mercury vapour. The mercury found in fish is Methyl Mercury and is often detoxified by the presence of Selenium (which is also found in fish).

Fact. In 1993 Germany's largest producer of amalgam announced it would no longer manufacture the product. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not certify Mixed Dental Amalgam as an implant material.

Dental Amalgam has never been approved as a restorative material by either American or Australian Environment Protection Agencies. The Swedish government pay 70% of the cost of removing amalgam fillings from its citizens.

Fact. Many studies have demonstrated that many dental personnel are poisoned and affected by mercury. Problems include: Infertility, spontaneous abortion and birthing problems up to twice the rest of the sample population, I.Q. levels reduced, twice the rate of glioblastomas (a form of brain cancer).

Fact. There is no research article which demonstrates the safety of dental amalgam as a non-toxic substance!

Fact. The prestigious Journal of Neurochemistry has recently published a study by Swiss and Belgian scientists showing a possible link between mercury exposure and Alzheimer's Disease (AD).

They exposed brain cells to minute amounts of mercury and observed changes that mimicked "all the biochemical lesions of AD". This study can be seen on the following website: www.jneurochem.org

Fact. University of Calgary researchers found that mercury caused the "neurofibrilary aggregates" characteristically found in the brains of AD sufferers.

The level of mercury exposure used was well below those levels found in humans with mercury/silver amalgam dental fillings. (NeuroReport, 2001;12:733-7).

In response to the concerns these findings raise and to protect the environment Sweden has placed a total ban on mercury fillings and Austria and Germany have restricted their use. California legislators have a bill in place to outlaw the use of mercury-containing dental fillings starting in 2007.

Fact. elevated levels of transistion metals (including mercury) have been found in breast cancer tissue. Reported in Journal of Neuroendocrinology Vol 27, Dec. 2006.

Metal Toxicity
by Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, Ph.D. ©2000 Dietrich Klinghardt
(Explore Issue: Volume 10, Number 1)

In the late phase of the Roman Empire, it was considered a privilege of the reigning aristocracy to drink out of lead cups and many of the water lines in the city of Rome were made out of lead pipes.

It took several hundred years before the physicians of the time established the link between mental illness - affecting mostly the aristocracy - and the contamination of the drinking water with lead.

In the 1700s, the use of mercury for the treatment of both acute and chronic infections gained favour and again, it took decades before the neuro-toxic and immuno-suppressive effects of mercury were well documented within the medical community.

In the time of Mozart, who died of mercury toxicity during a course of treatment for syphilis, any pathologist in Vienna was familiar with the severe greyish discoloration of organs in those who died from mercury toxicity and other organ-related destructive changes caused by mercury.

Metals in our Personal Environment

Heavy metals are called such because of their individual specific weight and are separated from all other metals including light metals.

The group of heavy metals of most concern includes mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel, zinc and copper.
Light metals such as aluminium, titanium and several others are special metals as they occur naturally; copper is in our red blood cells in large amounts and in many enzymes.

Selenium we know from bioscience is an important metal for the thyroid and heart, zinc is used in the immune system, and magnesium is in blood cells and in many enzymes.

Thus in this first paper on heavy metals, we will discuss the most prevalent and most damaging of them all - mercury. Once it has leached from the dental fillings and infiltrated the body, mercury becomes neurotoxin, says Dr. Klinghardt.

Strangely, a neurotoxin is a substance the nerve cells voluntarily absorb, even though it is poisonous.
They do this out of curiosity, Dr. Klinghardt explains.

Nerve endings in the peripheral nervous system constantly scan their environment, engulfing foreign particles and bringing them across the cell membrane for inspection.

"These substances may then travel all the way up from the foot to the spinal cord and get presented to the nerve cells there."

If the substance is judged harmful, the body tries to produce an antitoxin to neutralize it and eliminate it from the body.

However, there are two problems here when it comes to mercury, Dr. Klinghardt cautions. "As it travels up in the nerve, it destroys the body's mechanism and substance, called tubulin, for transporting substances in the nerves (breaking down the bridges behind it, as it were), and in effect, destroying the nerve.

Second, the body has not yet learned how to make an anti-neurotoxin against mercury."

Laboratory studies have shown that within 24 hours of injecting a minute dose of mercury into a muscle anywhere in the body (monkeys were used in the study), it would be present in the spinal cord and brain.

The mercury was also present in the kidneys, lungs, bloodstream, connective tissue, and adrenal and other endocrine glands.

In the brain, it tended to congregate in the hypothalamus, which regulates the sympathetic nervous system (associated with the brainstem), believed to be the organic seat of emotions.

While mercury levels slowly dissipate in a predictable amount of time from other body tissues and even from the teeth (in six weeks, its levels might be halved), mercury does not have a "half-life" in the nervous system or brain. Instead, it binds firmly to a specific chemical compound that happens to exist there in the body's highest concentrations.

"The main devastating effect of mercury in the nervous system is that it interferes with the energy production inside each cell," says Dr. Klinghardt.

"The nerve cell is impaired in its ability to detoxify itself [and excrete the mercury] and in its ability to nurture itself. The cell becomes toxic and dies, or lives in a state of chronic malnutrition. A multitude of illnesses usually associated with neurological symptoms, result."

Among these are chronic viral and fungal illnesses, recurrent episodes of bacterial infections, and chronic fatigue.

A curious self-preservation reflex of the body can view the emergence of these conditions as a way of accommodating the heavy metal presence, speculates Dr. Klinghardt.

"Most, if not all, chronic infectious diseases are not caused by a failure of the immune system, but are a conscious adaptation of the immune system to an otherwise lethal heavy metal environment."

Mercury suffocates the cells and they die, so the immune system cultivates fungi and bacteria which are able to bind large amounts of the toxic metal in their respective cell walls, thereby enabling the patient's cells to breathe again.

The downside, of course, is that the body must now feed these otherwise undesirable microbes and deal with their toxic waste. In addition, a person with mercury contamination often becomes zinc deficient and the functioning of copper and other minerals in the body will be compromised as well. The nations are in the midst of a grave health crisis.

It is a pandemic of environmental diseases in which mercury is intimately involved. Regardless of what the dental and medical authorities claim, mercury has been clearly linked, either directly or indirectly with a great many of these diseases.

This perspective leads Dr. Klinghardt to the following strong statement:

"As soon as anybody has any type of medical illness or symptom, whether medical or emotional, the amalgam fillings should be removed and the mercury residues should be eliminated from the body, especially the brain."

Volumes of material have been written on the cytotoxic effects of mercury. Many studies have been conducted on the detrimental effects of mercury on human subjects. Literally thousands of anecdotal reports' have been reported on the horrible consequences of mercury toxicity in people.

It is incomprehensible that organized medicine and dentistry still refuse to acknowledge the voluminous research findings that clearly implicate this toxic heavy metal in the aetiology of most of our diseases.

Take the time now to complete the questionnaire below. It will reveal the true extent of mercury's potential for destruction. This is important because mercury may have given you heart problems in, the form of heart attacks, chest pain, tachycardia, murmurs, heart blockages, or other problems.

Mercury could very well be the reason you suffer from high or low blood pressure. It is very likely that mercury is the cause of unexplained skin rashes, excessive itching, red flushes, rough skin and acne.

Mercury is the culprit responsible for the horrible functional degeneration seen in multiple sclerosis, and its spinal form - amyotropic lateral sclerosis (or ALS).

It is also involved in shingles; - numbness in any body part, epilepsy or convulsions, twitching, and knee or leg jerks especially at night.

Mercury also attacks the digestive system causing diverticulitis, ulcers, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disorder, and indigestion from most all causes, bloating, poor appetite, diarrhoea and constipation.

It is involved in Graves disease, and other endocrine diseases including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and pancreatic dysfunction including diabetes.

Mercury is involved in problems of the ovaries, testes, painful menstruation, irregular menstruation, premature menopause, and tipped uterus.

It is a likely culprit in cervical erosion and PMS. Mercury is also involved in almost all problems pertaining to the prostate gland in men.

It's involvement in grey penis and lack of sensitivity in that organ is legendary. In fact, mercury may be the leading cause of impotence in men.

Questionnaire

Are you ever bothered by metallic tastes in your mouth, frequent headaches, noises in your ears, ringing in your ears, chronic eye inflammations and chronic fatigue?

Are you quick to tire?

Do you have swollen lymph nodes, hearing loss, excessive sweating, cold hands and feet, motion sickness, slow healing, skin fungus infections, Candida infections, leg cramps, or dizziness?

Do you have to get up at night to urinate, or experience frequent urinations during the day?

Do you suffer from insomnia?

Are you tired on waking up, have trouble making decisions (i.e. indecision constipation)?

Are you guilty of perpetual procrastination?

Do you seem to have more than your fair share of sore throats?

Have you had mono?

Mercury probably is responsible for mononucleosis and for false positives in venereal disease tests.
It is always involved in leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and many other grave disorders.

Mercury toxicity may underlie the phenomenal weight problems Americans have. It may be responsible for being underweight and/or being overweight.

It is invariably found in cases of chronically low or subnormal temperature (hypothyroidism). Mercury also causes emotional problems often leading to the loss of friends and relatives (i.e. divorces).

For example, mercury can bring about sudden bursts of anger, massive depression, death wish mentation, suicide, extreme irritability, and divorces.

It and aluminum are invariably involved in Alzheimer's disease. It is involved in rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, bursitis, tennis elbow, painful joints, Friedreich's ataxia, asthma, osteomyelitis, psoriasis, sickle cell anaemia, chronic anaemia, kidney stones, and virtually all allergies.

Sources of Mercury.

The toxicity of mercury is not only from the major source of dental amalgams, but is also found in a natural state in soil and has been processed and used in a wide variety of industrial applications from the manufacture of wood pulp to agricultural fungicides and pesticides and is found in most plastics.

Other sources of mercury contamination are from pharmaceutical medicines including vaccinations and laxatives, cosmetics, large ocean fish such as swordfish and tuna, films, plastics, and paint.

We ingest or inhale inorganic mercury through our air, food, water, and soil - our bodies can even absorb it through our skin and convert it into even more highly toxic methyl mercury.

Additional sources are inks, in some printing and tattoos, refined grains and seeds may test for methyl mercury, chlorine bleaches, contact lens solutions (antibacterial mercury compound is found in contact lens cleaning solutions and injectable vitamins and drugs), felt, fabric softener, floor waxes and polishes, film, broken thermometers and barometers, antiseptic creams/lotions, and nasal sprays.

Are you now ready to believe that mercury may have affected your life?

Hopefully, the above will awaken you as to the danger you face and the danger that everyone in your family faces.

STOP PRESS JULY 2008

America's health regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), finally acknowledges that amalgam fillings are harmful to health.

Amalgam fillings in our teeth are toxic and harmful to our health, America's health regulator, the FDA, has finally admitted, after claiming for years that they were safe.

This unprecedented about-turn marked the sudden end of a lawsuit that had been mounted by advocacy groups, such as Moms Against Mercury, who are seeking to ban the use of mercury in amalgam fillings and children's vaccinations.

In an official statement, which has been posted on the FDA website, the regulator admitted that mercury containing dental fillings "may have neuro-toxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and foetuses".

The statement puts the US in line with a handful of other countries that already ban the use of mercury fillings in pregnant women.

The FDA is calling for further research, and may announce a complete ban on amalgam fillings next year.

Norway imposed a complete ban on amalgam fillings this year.

In the meantime, pregnant women, and people who have "a health condition that makes them more sensitive to mercury exposure" or high levels of mercury already, should talk to their dentists about safer alternatives, the FDA has announced.
