Why Mercury-Free Dentistry (no mercury amalgam)? At the Henry Shaw clinic in Winscombe Somerset, near Bristol in the South West of England, we are frequently asked about the importance of mercury free dentistry. Consequently below this important subject is discussed. Why choose Mercury-Free Dentistry? The poisonous effects of mercury have long been recognised and we only use mercury-free materials for all fillings, using the strict protocols laid down by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. We are of the view that mercury amalgams, commonly referred to as "silver fillings", are toxic (see our Fact Page on Amalgams). This view is at variance with the British and American Dental Associations although the wind of change is blowing through both. At present the BDA maintains that dental mercury amalgam is safe. We do not! Many people have metals in the mouth, including dental amalgam fillings, which contain 50% mercury. Mercury is one of the most toxic substances known to man. For many years it was thought that mercury was locked into fillings and could not escape. Now it has been established beyond doubt that mercury is released from fillings 24 hours a day, in the form of vapour-the most toxic form, which is readily absorbed by the body. In susceptible individuals, mercury has been shown to be a potential contributory factor in many medical conditions such as Pregnancy, Immunological, Endocrine Symptoms, Renal, Gastric and Neurological conditions have all been linked to mercury fillings. Scientists have shown that trace amounts of mercury can cause the type of damage to nerves that is characteristic of the damage found in Alzheimer's disease. The level of mercury exposure used in the test was well below those levels found in many humans with mercury/silver amalgam dental fillings. The research conducted at the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine found that exposure to mercury caused the formation of "neurofibrillar tangles, which are one of the two diagnostic markers for Alzheimer's disease. The research, published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, is accompanied by a video presentation of the effect. Utilizing digital time-lapse photography, this video shows rapid damage to the nerve cells after introduction of minute amounts of mercury. To view the video clip, click here. Research at the University of Munich shows a direct correlation between mercury in the bodies of dead foetuses and still born children, and the amount of fillings the mother has. (The German Health Ministry now recommends no amalgam for women of reproductive age.) The British Government's Chief Dental Officer advised pregnant women not to have or remove amalgam tooth fillings. He said there was a possible risk that vapour from the mercury could damage unborn children. In July 2008 the U.S. regulator (the Food and Drug Administration) dropped much of its reassuring language on the fillings from its website. Instead it now says: 'Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and foetuses.' It adds that mercury vapour is released when amalgam fillings are placed or removed, and during the chewing of food. The FDA is now carrying out an urgent review of its rules and may end up banning mercury fillings. Problems associated with mercury poisoning include: Immunological
Endocrine Symptoms
Renal Renal damage. Kidney function can be severely impaired very quickly (50% in thirty days). Considering the yearly rise in kidney disease and the number of patients on dialysis, this research is of considerable importance. Gastric Intestinal flora can be significantly altered and other bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. This is of concern in postoperative complications Neurological Conditions
