Frequently Asked Questions (Cosmetic Procedures)What is the procedure for sclerotherapy?Sclerotherapy involves the use of very fine surface injections at various sites along the blood vessel, it is not used to treat varicose veins. The injection may have to be repeated once or twice to ensure complete removal. This is a well-established medical technique. Thread veins can restrict both our leisure activities and the clothes we wear. This can be easily rectified by sclerotherapy, so following treatment you will feel more confident about wearing shorts and bathing costumes. For the face we use diathermy to cauterise the dilated capillary veins, which then dry up and disappear. This will remove those unsightly small red lines from your cheeks, nose and face quickly and effectively. Treatment of larger blemishes result in considerable improvement, but it is not always possible to remove all the capillaries. For the legs a very fine needle is gently inserted into the capillary network and a small amount of a special solution called a sclerosant is injected. This solution acts like a medical glue that enables the capillary walls to be stuck together. Sclerotherapy requires the use of special local anaesthetics. Our treatments come with full aftercare, along with advice on a skin care routine to help prevent more red veins appearing. Is Sclerotherapy safe?Yes it has been used for at least 20 years as a tried and tested method of removing unwanted thread veins. It is evidence based with an extremely high safety profile. Are there any side effects?Side effects are rare and if they do occur are 99.9% temporary. Initially, following treatment there will be redness and swelling like tiny gnat bites. This will disappear after two to three days. Bruising will take slightly longer to fade. We can provide homeopathic support which helps to reduce healing time. How long does a Sclerotherapy treatment take? Each treatment will take about half an hour. At your initial treatment we shall give an indication of how many treatments will be necessary to complete your course. How long will it last?Red vein removal is usually permanent unless you imbibe great amounts of alcohol, smoke or get pregnant. Is it painful?Facial red vein removal is by diathermy, similar to electrolysis. Some areas can be uncomfortable i.e around the nose. Sclerotherapy gives a very mild burning sensation. What is the procedure for Dermal fillers?Dermal fillers are placed by a series of surface injections in the wrinkle. For deep wrinkles it may be necessary to layer the fillers at separate visits. They can be used for all facial wrinkles and some facial scars including acne scars, not those close to either blood vessels, birth marks, or the eyeball. The most aging facial lines are the vertical lines, i.e. frown lines, lines from nose to chin and lip lines, dermal fillers are most effective on these. They cannot be placed in areas of infection, skin disease, eczema, cold sores etc. How are lips enhanced? The lips can be defined with an injection into the outline of the lip called the 'vermilion border'. Fillers can be also be used to augment the lip itself and give it a fuller look. The lines that go up towards the nose 'philtrum ridges' can also be defined. The life span of a lip filler will depend on whether the right type of filler is used. A filler that is appropriate for another part of the face may not be suitable for the lips, as it will be reabsorbed too quickly. A filler in your lip may not last as long as a filler injected in a part of your face that doesn't move so much. Smokers lip enhancement does not last as long as non - smokers Is Restylane safe?Yes, Restylane has FDA and Dept of Health approval in America. Restylane does not require allergy testing and treatment can start immediately. It is suitable for all skin types. Restylane is a hyaluronic acid not of animal origin. It softens and eliminates facial, neck and chest lines, wrinkles, skin depressions and scars. It also gives full, sexy lips. It gives a more youthful, fresher look and is ideal for removing 'lipstick bleed' lines. Is it painful?Any cosmetic practitioner who says no is being economical with the truth. Some areas are sensitive e.g. around the mouth but we use local anesthetics to reduce discomfort in these areas. Extremely fine, sterile, single-use needles with Teflon coating keep discomfort to a minimum. Having a dentistry background we are very experienced at administering local anesthetics with the minimum of discomfort. Are there any side effects? There may be a small amount of initial swelling and some redness. If this occurs it normally disappears within 24 hours. What happens next? The results are immediately visible and look their best approximately two weeks later. An after treatment facial may be beneficial. We can advise on this. How long does a Restylane treatment take?On average thirty minutes. What happens next? The results are immediately visible and appear at their best approximately two weeks later. An after treatment facial may be beneficial. We can advise on this. It is recommended that top-up treatments be received before the effects of the initial treatment have faded totally.
